Life Lately: Hurricane Edition

Everything's been a bit shaken up around here lately. I got sick over the weekend just in time for Hurricane Sandy to smash the East coast. Thankfully, our house had very little damage aside from a few missing shingles, and we never flooded. My thoughts are with the many who were less fortunate through the storm. Though we (also thankfully) never lost power, a lot of CT is out so I've been home from work until today...What day is it again?...Our town has postponed Halloween for a week so that officials can clean up the mess! So needless to say it's been a strange few days, but my heart goes out to everyone who didn't fare so well.

Clockwise from top left: Pumpkin patch cupcakes, Monti sporting his Halloween shirt,
my not-so-impressive pumpkin and her lashes, and goofing off on a Saturday.

Business as Usual

Head to Toe: Skirt, Loft (Gift); Top, Hollister; Blazer, Mom's; Tights, Target; Clogs, Target; Bag, Rue 21

I've fallen into a more casual day to day work look but decided to go a bit more professional Tuesday since I had to be out and about. I got a lot of complements on my orange tights...Funny how something so simple can totally transform an outfit. Happy almost Friday!

Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Costumes always look better when you make them yourself. If you get a last-minute invite or just aren't too handy with a sewing machine and glue gun, these costume ideas can be made using clothes you probably already have in your closet or can easily find at Goodwill. Happy Halloween!

Snooki

A hilarious spin on last year's Snooki costume, wear any tacky club dress (leopard preferred) with outrageous heels. Tease a huge pouf, and of course, spray tan. Steal Borrow your niece's baby doll and you're good to go.

Sandy

An oldie but goodie is Sandy from Grease. Throw on your leather leggings, a black tank, a leather jacket and red heels (black will do also, only super-fans will notice the difference). Curl your hear and wear red lipstick and you'll be singing "Greased Lightning" all night long. Tell your man to wear black jeans with a black undershirt and to slick his hair back and you've got a partner in crime.

Holly

This costume is easier than it looks. Pair a LBD with pumps, pile on the pearls and grab some long gloves at the thrift store. Purchase a cheap tiara and cigarette holderI was a flapper a few years ago and found one at a Halloween store for about $1.

Gymnast

Perfectly timed after this past summer's Olympics is the gymnast costume. Wear your leotard from the Gaga body suite craze with track pants and throw on a cheap medal. A tight ponytail completes the look.

Katniss

If you're as obsessed with The Hunger Games as I am, you're going to love this one. Green skinnies, a black tee, boots (combat preferred but any will have a similar effect) and a raincoat or leather jacket make the look. Braid your hair, and if you're really hard core, grab a bow and arrows at the costume shop (or borrow from a friend who hunts, not recommended).

Festive Fall

Head to Toe: Top, Thirfted; Blazer, Forever 21; Flats, Vince Camuto via Marshall's; Earrings, Kayla Skeen Jewelry; Jeans, Loft; Watch, Fossil (Gift).

Happy Saturday!  I'm spending the day with Mackenzie because we started dating on this day five years ago. It seems like forever ago and yesterday in the same breath, but I couldn't be more happy. Also on my to-do list? Making my Halloween costume, the highlight of my fall.

Then and now. Happy five years Mackenzie! Love you.

Easy Breezy

Head to Toe: Tunic, Thrifted; Leggings, American Eagle; Scarf, Gap (Gift); Boots, Frye; Bag, American Eagle (Gift); Shades, Kenneth Cole via Marshall's.

Nothing beats a tunic and leggings if you ask me. Leg warmers, a chunky scarf, and easy accessories add style without losing out on the comfort. Happy Friday!

Color Theory

Head to Toe: Top, Loft; Skirt, Forever 21; Clogs, Target; Scarf, Gift.

I got a lot of compliments on my fall colors in this outfit. It's probably because warm, autumnal (funny, a co-worker of mine was just talking about that word today) colors really work on my skin tone. Still, I can't resist trendy neons and pastels, even if they aren't as flattering. What's your color theory? Do you try and wear shades that flatter your tone?

Ear Candy

Head to Toe: T-shirt, Hollister; Sweater, Forever 21 via consignment shop; Jeans, Loft; Boots, Frye; Headband; DIY.

Hello and happy Tuesday! Sorry for my absence; I’ve been busy redoing my room (can’t wait to share the outcome). Anyway, check it out—one of my very first crochet creations. I’m really pleased with how this headband turned out. No one believed I made it! The good news is that it’s such a great beginner project with only a basic stitch and straight lines.

Tomboy

Head to Toe: Pants, Gap via consignment shop; Clogs, Target; Button-down, Marshall's; Sweater jacket, Loft (Gift); Bag, American Eagle (Gift).

It finally happened; the cold really came. Mackenzie's mom gave me this great sweater jacket that came in handy on a frigid Monday. I normally have trouble wearing loose styles without looking like my clothes are just too big, but I'm in love with how this boyish outfit came together. My heeled clogs added a little feminity and length with cuffed boyfriend-cut pants.

In other news, California, here I come!...In a few months that is. Mackenzie and I booked our trip tonight for  San Diego around the holidays. West Coasters, any must-sees?

Fall For You

Head to Toe: T-shirt, Thrifted; Jeans, Alloy; Moccasins, Minnetonkas (Gift); Sweater, American Rag (Gift).

My weekend was perfectly packed with fall festivities. Mackenzie and I went apple picking Saturday and it luckily was sunny the whole time, despite threats of rain. I also indulged in kettle corn, cider and apple cider donuts from the farm store that were spectacular. Plus I successfully completed my first crochet scarf  (below, post to come) and even squeezed in a little thrifting. Sunday I did some baking with my haul. Success!

I always make my signature apple crisp in the fall, but I wanted to try something a little different, so I made these Cinnamon Apple Muffins from Taste of Home. I didn't have unsweetened apple juice, so i used cider for the glaze, and they are delicious!
