Stellaaaaaa! Snow Day Outfit

Head to Toe: Sweater, Banana Republic (thrifted) // Jeans, Old Navy // Boots, Sorel // Coat, Calvin Klein (thrifted) // Beanie, Teva
Dear, Stella. I really enjoyed the work from home day in my pajamas yesterday, typing next to my window with a yummy-smelling candle burning. I made eggs and bacon for breakfast, and it was great. Today, however, trekking through slushy Manhattan streets in the blistering cold (in mid-March), wasn't so great. Thank goodness for these Sorel boots, which literally saved me from a day with wet feet when I stepped into what appeared to be a few inches of slush and was actually an up-to-my-calf sink hole. I have been enjoying slowly bringing out my spring wardrobe, but thanks to you, Stella, I'm back to chunky sweaters, puffy coats and knit beanies (although I must admit, I love a good beanie). Let's call it even for now, but please tell your friends to stay away until next winter.

March Birchbox Review

March Birchbox
Happy snow day, fashionistas! NYC is getting pounded with sleet and snow, so I'm writing from my cozy apartment today. I've been a Birchbox subscriber for years, and I never thought about posting a review. Honestly, I'm no beauty blogger and am far from a makeup guru, but I'm always talking to friends and coworkers about Birchbox and thought I should share! For me, it's a gift I give myself for only $10 a month, and it keeps me from spending too much money on makeup—because I'm never sure what will arrive next month!

March's box is called "Pretty Mighty" and is supposed to focus on products that bring out your inner boss lady. The Beauty Protector Protect & Volume spray was my favorite item. I sprayed it onto dry hair before doing my daily curling routine, and it left my hair light and soft (not crunchy). And the smell is great. I also got a small sample of Clean Rain perfume which smells really light and fresh—more of a spring day scent as opposed to a Friday date night perfume.

Now, stay with me, let's get into the real beauty blogger stuff. The Benefit They're Real! Lengthening Mascara is serious stuff. Being an amateur who doesn't have an eyelash curler, I wasn't crazy about it. My lashes were super bold but very straight, and it was hard for me to apply without clumping. I'm going to hang onto this to use as a topcoat mascara on a weekend night out, but it was a little too much for everyday use for me. It also needed an extra swipe of makeup remover after cleansing to come off.

I wanted to try out the Supergoop! Defense Setting Mist SPF 50 even though I wasn't going out in the sun. It went on lightly over my makeup and didn't look greasy, so I will definitely be using it for outdoor days, but probably won't add into my everyday routine. (Although derms would probably say I should, no? See, not a beauty blogger.)

Last, eyeshadow, my favorite step. I was really happy with the Coastal Scents Smoky Palette (note, only a duo came in Birchbox, the whole palette pictured up top is $20). The colors are perfect for a spring "smoky" eye, and were lighter and more subtle than I was expecting. Lately, I've been loving ELF eyeshadow palettes (I have Made for Matte and Prism), but I'll definitely be keeping this duo in my purse for mid-day touchups.

So there you have it, my very first beauty post! Do you have any makeup subscriptions?

Spring Sunnies

Head to Toe: Top, thrifted // Bomber, Buffalo Exchange // Slacks, hand-sewn by mom // Mules, Summit // Bag, Vintage Thrift (gift) // Shades, Vera Wang

Thank goodness for some sun! I'm not getting used to it, though, since several inches of snow is on its way tomorrow. Still, I took the opportunity today to sport my shades and show some ankle for work and press previews. Tomorrow, I'm taking some long overdue personal time, so it's my Friday! Almost there, fashionistas...

Fresh Catch

Head to Toe: Blouse, The Loft // Slacks, Stylwe // Jacket, Target // Oxfords, Latigo // Tights, Marshall's

I have to admit, I've been obsessed with the fishnets-under-pants look that's trending right now. I mean, how cool are the girls in the photos below? So cool. But, if you haven't tried it, let me tell you the truth about this look: It's disastrously uncomfortable. I really wanted to layer my fishnets under jeans, but the truth is, putting on your pants with fishnets underneath is extremely difficult. I couldn't get any of my jeans to fit over fishnets without feeling like an actual flounder caught in a net. So, I decided to layer them over these loose-fitting culottes for a trade show last week. On the style side, it was a win. I got a ton of compliments on my outfit and felt like I had that cool-girl styling factor (I mean, not as cool as the chick below, but still cool). On the comfort side, however, it was a total fail. My oxfords dug into my heels with no real barrier, and my feet felt like I was walking on fishing line. Although we all do it, suffering for fashion is just not something I'm into these days, so I'd advise going for this look if you're going out to a quick brunch or event you want to look super cool at—not if you plan on walking around a trade show, or anywhere for that matter, all day long.

Curb Appeal

Head to Toe: Top and vest, Buffalo Exchange // Jacket, L Train Vintage // Pants, thrifted // Bag, vintage // Boots, J. Shoes // Shades, Vera Wang

When Refinery 29 and Wear launched a street style contest to win a $1,000 Anthropologie shopping spree, my coworkers and I were excited to enter. Tasked with creating an Anthro-inspired look, I immediately thought of these pants. I got them at a consignment shop near my old apartment in Connecticut (it closed shortly after I moved in, sadly) still with tags on, so I knew they were from the store. I paired with these blue booties and a vintage bag and piled on the layers (necessary for a sunny but super windy March day). We enlisted the help of our Creative Director and in-house photographer Trevett, who took these awesome street style shots. Move over, Sartorialist! Even if we don't win, it was a fun way to break up a busy Thursday, and I'm pretty dang stoked for these photos.
